You mention a great list of guidelines for nethics to follow, but I was curious as to what happens if you break these rules? What are the repercussions, if any? Are there any studies/ information out there on how to fix breaking these rules?
After searching I could not find any real findings of consequences for not following netiquette guidelines. In some of the netiquette articles I looked at it basically said that people who didn't follow netiquette would be responsible for creating a large amount of spam. Other than that there were no consequences. I think that a major consequence for not following netiquette guidelines would be that users would be making the internet not appropriate for all users because of what could be found and it would make using the internet in a business environment more difficult because mailboxes would fill with spam and no one could use the internet to post presentations or share memos.

You talk about respecting other people’s privacy, especially when it comes to email. And how someone would feel if they knew someone else was reading their personal emails. With today’s technology almost anything you do nowadays on the internet can be looked at. Either by your work monitoring your computer, or hackers breaking into it. People should realize anything they do or say could come back to bite them. Do you think people should be expressing such personal information through email if they don’t want someone else reading it?
I think that if people are overly concerned about people reading their mail then the information they don't want to get out should probably not be shared with anyone or if it must be shared the the safest way to get the information only to those people would be by word of mouth. I don't think that there is really anyway to make sure that what you share, either by mouth, by writing, or by electronic media, will remain private. If it needs to stay private then don't tell anyone!!

There is also a lot of users that download music illegally. This is agaist netiquette, but on the other hand it is almost like free advertising for the artists. Do you feel illegally downloaded has any positive attributes at all?
Pirating music hurts current recording artists because it takes away money from them (Bennett, 2005). It also hurts new artists too because producers will not sign new artists if they are not making enough money due to pirated music (Bennett, 2005). However, allowing people to download music can help bands who are not well known become popular (Romatoski, 2007). The internet can also help bands who are hard to find make money because people can sample their music and then use the internet to purchase their cd (Romatoski, 2007). I think that pirating music could hurt the music industry because if the number of songs being pirated increases and people stop buying cds there is going to be no way for artists to make money. I think that songs should be able to be sampled, so that you can hear most of a song or a few songs from a cd, in order for the fan base to expand and for people to get excited about upcoming releases.

In the nethics section you cited that one commandment was, "thou shalt not use copied software that you didn't pay for". These seems like it goes unobserved. How many people in the world or in the U.S. avoid this commandment because they want to save money? How much revenue do software companies miss out on do to people using copied software?
According to Wikipedia, the number of pirated software users has dropped in the US from 48% in 1989 to 25% in 2002 (2007). The US is the country most affected by the pirated software because they produce about 80% of the world's software (Copyright infringement, 2007). The software companies in the US are reporting a loss of revenue of $11-12 billion (Copyright infringement, 2007). China is the country who is has the most copyright infringement, they copy and use over 90% of software illegally (Copyright infringement, 2007).
